MARKETS 4 AFRICA

About Markets for Africa

Connecting Farmers to Markets!

Markets 4 Africa (M4A) is a transformative, high socio-economic impact initiative that creates fresh produce markets as retail platforms for entrepreneurs (growers and retailers).

Inspired by the success of Barcelona’s managed retail markets, the Markets 4 Africa project is tailored to the African context.

By connecting farmers to markets, these formalised markets provide a direct route for smallholder farmers to reach consumers, supporting more stable food prices and creating new economic opportunities.

Overview of Markets 4 People

MISSION

To develop well located, functional, fresh produce markets across Africa and in the process enable and enhance human health, food security, sustainable development and the strengthening of communities.

VISION

The M4A vision is of a world where most people have reasonable access to a retail, fresh produce market providing healthy food alternatives and where smaller producers have outlets for their fresh produce.

GOAL

Healthier cities, empowered farmers (including small and medium scale farmers), equitable food access, embracing formality for health and safety and the use of digital enablement for ease of business.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Improving fresh produce local supply chains, waste reduction, renewable energy and access for organic and regenerative agricultural products.

SOCIAL BENEFITS

Enhanced access to nutritional products, urban renewal, inclusionary trade practices, opportunities for local entrepreneurs and job creation.

GOVERNANCE

Formal management and support of these markets and digital tracking to ensure health and hygiene regulations are adhered to.

Filling a real need!

The Competition Commission’s Fresh Produce Market Inquiry (2025) highlighted the structural barriers faced by new entrants into the formal retail market.

AgriLink insights reveal that smallholder farmers lack affordable distribution points with modern market infrastructure.

Markets 4 Africa directly addresses these issues by providing fresh produce markets into high visibility, high traffic areas.
